Water Rising in Northwestern
Bulgaria


The situation in Northwestern
Bulgaria is about to become
critical as the rising levels of the
Danube and Timok Rivers
threaten to flood the area.

The northwestern Bulgarian
municipality of Bregovo located
along the border with Serbia has
declared an emergency situation
because of the rising level of the
Timok River.

The Municipality has asked the
local people to volunteer for the
immediate further construction of
the main dike in order to save the
town. Some 5 000 decares of
agricultural land and 15 houses
have already been flooded.
Residents of the suburbs of the
town have started to evacuate.

At the same time, the level of the
Danube River continues to rise
threatening to flood much larger
areas in Northwestern and
Northern Bulgaria. [Read More

Military 'threat' to Serbia
prompts diplomatic efforts

Jadranka Kosor has sought to
ease tensions with Serbia, after
her president said he would send
troops into neighbouring Bosnia if
the leader of its Serb region
carried out a threat to hold a
referendum on independence.

Tadic Accuses Mesic of
Warmongering

Serbian President Boris Tadic
slammed the most recent
statement by Croatia’s outgoing
president Stjepan Mesic,
accusing his Croatian counterpart
of warmongering and threatening
the stability of the region.
During an informal meeting with
journalists on Tuesday, Mesic
said he would intervene militarily if
Milorad Dodik, Republika Srpska’
s prime minister, made a move to
secede from Bosnia.
