Political Crisis in Romania Threatens the
Catholic Minority
Friday, 09 October 2009 14:41

The current political crisis in Romania is amplified by the
Orthodox Church, the majority religious group in the
country, which lobbies for a law to keep properties taken
from Eastern Rite Catholics, who are a religious minority.
Los Angeles, CA/October 9, 2009 - Religious tensions
have amplified the current national political crisis in
Romania. With the collapse of the country's governing
coalition last week and the presidential election less
than two months away, the Orthodox Church is pushing
for members of the Romanian Parliament to pass a law
that would grant the Orthodox Church permanent
ownership of churches and other properties that were
seized from the Greek-Catholic Church by the
communist regime in 1948.
The Romanian Orthodox Church released a political
statement on September 29 proposing that the
Greek-Catholic properties should be split between the
two Churches "based on the current number of believers
that each Church has within the local community."

    Pray for Romania
    Listed 1-18-10

    1.        Let us pray for the churches of Romania. God
has ordained for the churches to set the moral
standard for cultures. May the Christians rise up to
point out sin, give a hand-up to the weak and cry out
daily to the Lord to cleanse the land.
    2.        Lord we ask You to visit every group in Romania
that calls itself a church. ( Orthodox - 86.8%; Roman
    Catholic - 5%; Reformed - 3.5%; Protestant - 3.5%;
Greek Catholic, Unitarian and others - 1.2%) Let them
know they are the back-bone of the country. May they
daily pray and ask for Your mercy.
    3.        Lord we thank You for moving in Romania.
There are many fires of revival. Lord, may Your grace
    be seen throughout the land.
    4.        Lord we ask for your grace to be reported
through the media. Raise up men and women that will
see the good things You are doing and would write
stories and take the cameras and report the good
    news.
    5.        Let us pray for the Word of the Lord to spread
out across Romania. May the pastors and the priest be
bold and proclaim the good news. Lord, You broke the
yoke of communism off the land and now the church
has freedom. Lord may they not waste this time of
    opportunity.
    6.        Lord, we pray for every intercessor that is called
to pray for Romania. Protect them, may they dwell
close to Your throne and have the ears of their hearts
tuned to hear Your voice. Show them the joy of waging
spiritual warfare over Romania. Lord, we stand and
    declare victory.
    7.        Let us pray for the government of Romania.
Lord, we ask for the lifting up of faithful citizens and the
tearing down of corrupt politicians. May the people of
Romania be blessed with good government.
    8.        We pray for President Traian Basescu and
Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu. Lord, we ask
that You surround these men with righteous advisors.
    9.        Lord, we ask for Nehemiahs to be raised up in
Romania to rule. Nehemiah 5:14-15 “Moreover, from
the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the
land of Judah, … neither I nor my brothers ate the
governor’s provisions. But the former governors who
were before me laid burdens on the people, and took
from them bread and wine, … Yes, even their servants
bore rule over the people, but I did not do so, because
    of the fear of God.”
    10.        Let us pray for a missionary named Michael
Lundell in Bucharest. He was very much used of God in
the youth camps of 2009. Youth camps are very
important for evangelizing young people throughout
the Balkans. Let us pray that Michael would stay on the
cutting edge of God’s plan for Romania and would
have much favor in the culture.

    The Iasi connection

    Dear Friends,
As I reflect on many of the blessings that God
bestowed upon my ministry in the past year and begin
to think of what this all means for the new year, I
immediately thought of the city of
    Iasi, Romania.

Last year I was privileged to work with a group of
adolescents from Iasi in a camp organized by our youth
leadership network. In fact, because I was able to
relate so well with this group of
adolescents, their youth leader invited me in November
to come and speak at their youth meeting. Despite
having a fever that weekend, I thoroughly enjoyed
interacting with this group of teens on fire for the Lord
and eager to be God’s disciples in the city of
pretending and just be yourself.” The idea being that
many adolescents often pretend and try to be
someone they are not in order to be more popular,
garner attention, etc. The youth pastor at this
particular Brethren Church in Iasi has requested that I
work more closely with this group of adolescents by
exchanging ideas, Bible studies, etc., in addition to
coming to Iasi to give a message once in a while. I am
also hoping that this group will take a trip to my church
in Bucharest in the near future. I have already seen
some of these teens come to know the Lord personally
for the first time—and that’s truly exciting stuff! I
consider it a huge privilege to work with this group, and
I can’t wait to tell you all that the Lord is going to do
    through them.

It’s going to be an exciting year. Wishing you a blessed
    2010!

    From your “Romaniac,”

28 Roma (Gypsies) came to Salvation

I just returned from 5 days of ministry in
Romania with Pastor Eduard Rudoff, Gyuszi
and the leaders at Church on a Hill in Apata.
Matt Lankenau, my European Initiative co-
worker and a German friend joined me on the
trip.  It was bitter cold in the Transylvanian
mountains – temps in the morning were –10
Fahrenheit!!!  We delivered hundreds of coats,
sweaters, fleeces and sleeping bags to
impoverished Gypsies who struggle to survive
    the brutal winter.

Before we even began distributing the clothing,
we went house by house meeting Gypsies,
praying for them and as God would give us the
opportunity, sharing the Gospel.  By His great
grace, 28 Gypsies came to salvation, and a
few were healed physically.  May I ask that you
    pray for these new believers.

    Warm blessings from Berlin,
    Jeff Serio
